Career Academies

The Career Academies program helps Los Angeles students to develop high levels of academic competency enriched by exposure to business and industry related knowledge and practices.  The Initiative engages parents, educators, business and university leaders and community members to help young people earn high schools degrees, pursue higher education and achieve professional success.

Organized in small learning communities of students and teachers in six Los Angeles High Schools, each year more than twelve hundred Academy students take part in rigorous coursework focused on helping students to meet college entrance requirements, as well as additional courses offering specific industry knowledge and skills. Academy of Finance students enroll in a college course in accounting & finance at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. Paid internships, job-shadowing opportunities, access to experts and mentoring efforts motivate students and provide real life experiences offering insight into the world of work.

Serving mostly poor and minority youth, the Academies also work to open the doors to college for program participants.  Academy students participate in college planning seminars, including assistance with applications, applying for financial aid and college application essays. Scholarships are offered each year to talented graduating seniors admitted to a four-year college.
