More than 44,000 computers have been refurbished at prisons and vocational facilities and donated to schools and nonprofit organizations. In 1997 and 1998, the program expanded to 20 additional states (see map).The Foundation maintains a database of schools wanting equipment to pair with equipment being donated by area corporations. By using donated computers and printers, schools stretch their budgets for training, software, wiring and other peripherals. Computers are donated with a limited warranty replacement. The Foundation works with other agencies and Departmens of Education in each state to determine school application/eligibility procedures. Equipment donors receive numerous benefits including giveaway events, media releases and school site visibility. The Foundation is a nonprofit 501[c][3] organization that receives no public funding.
