SHARES / MATERIALS FOR THE ARTS PROGRAM is a nonprofit reuse program which takes corporate donations of reusable materials, manufacturers' overages, and discontinued items and makes them available at no cost to nonprofit groups and schools throughout Los Angeles County. In 1997, L.A. SHARES gave away almost $9,000,000 worth of goods to over 1,400 organizations, and is now the largest single donor to the Los Angeles Unified School District, the recreation and parks, theater, senior citizen and alcohol and drug recovery communities. Donors receive tax deductions for contributions and save on disposal costs - L.A. SHARES picks up materials for free. By utilizing L.A. SHARES, California businesses adhere to Assembly Bill 939 requiring landfill-bound waste reduction of 35% by 1995 and 50% by 2000.
