Patterned after case methods used to prepare professionals in business and law, mathematics case discussions focus on grounding theoretical ideas and enhancing analytical thought, reflection, and inquiry. Over the past eight years we have engaged teachers to discuss cases and to serve as case writers, case discussion facilitators, and professional developers in the case method. Materials and opportunities for teachers, professional developers, and principals include seminars on successful strategies for using the case discussion approach; a casebook and facilitator's guide; an introductory videotape; and numerous research papers. Cases for primary grade teachers and students are currently in development.
