Transformed Schools

Urban Education Partnership supports high-quality teaching by providing ongoing professional development, teacher networks and creating small learning communities that offer students a rigorous and motivating learning experience.

Urban schools face a number of challenges: recruiting and retaining high-quality teachers; supporting teachers as life-long learners and creating personalized learning environments where students are encouraged to excel.

Initiatives include:

  • Career Academies: The Career Academies program helps Los Angeles students to develop high levels of academic competency enriched by exposure to business and industry related knowledge and practices.  The Initiative engages parents, educators, business and university leaders and community members to help young people earn high schools degrees, pursue higher education and achieve professional success.

  • Humanitas: Humanitas is one of the nation’s oldest and most successful learning communities, engaging more than 400 teachers and 11,000 students in Los Angeles high schools. The program improves the academic achievement of disadvantaged students by strengthening the knowledge, skill and job satisfaction of their teachers, and by engaging students in a close knit learning experience that keeps them together with caring and dedicated teachers over much of the course of their high school experience.

  • Target Science: The Target Science Teacher Network program seeks to boost student learning and achievement in science in Los Angeles by improving the quality of instruction and building the leadership capacity of science teachers.

  • Mathematics: Provides teacher networks and teacher-directed workshops to support secondary and elementary math and science teachers in improving mathematics education for all children and to increase the number of students enrolled in high level mathematics classes.

  • .
  • School Based Coaching Services: The School Based Coaching Services program is improving student learning and achievement by promoting literacy in English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Initiative coaches promote standards based instruction, provide teachers with intensive professional development, and connect teachers with supportive collegial networks that share ideas and expertise.
