Electronic Resources:

There are many GOPHER and FTP sites on CORE. Several GOPHERS are listed under "Outside services". Once you have located a site, download the INDEX and any README files. These will tell you what files are avaiable and what additional software you may need to download, such as uncompression programs, GIF converters, paint programs, etc. Most of this software is freeware or shareware. If you like the shareware and use it, send in the nominal fee to the programmer.

Downloading the software can be tricky, even if you have the better communications software. Procom is popular on IBM platforms. Mac users often recommend ZTERM. ZTERM is shareware. GINA should be available for both Mac and IBM users soon.

Getting lost while searching GOPHER sites is not difficult. Try to keep track of what path led you to the site. If in doubt, download interesting files as you find them. You might not be able to find them again for some time. Try sending yourself e-mail from that site or mark it for your personal list.

Spacelink, NASA's BBS for educators, can be found under OUTSIDE SERVICES on CORE. Spacelink offers news, lessons, background information, images, and software.

The Remote Access Astronomy Project (RAAP) operated by UCSB offers students and educators a chance to remotely control a 14 inch telescope with a CCD camera. You designate the target and location and download the digital CCD images the next day. Image enhancing software is available to educators. There is also a large database of images for astronomy, earth science, and biology. (805) 893-2650.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, JPL, offers its own database of astronomical images. For Mac users with ZTerm, these images are a snap to download. Lessons, background information, and software are also listed. (818) 354-1333.

Field Trips:
