Dear Colleague:

Philosophical Overview Welcome to Sunrise . . . Sunset! Sunrise . . . Sunset is an interactive, interdisciplinary curriculum unit designed by teachers for other teachers in California.

It is our belief that all students can learn, regardless of language, ethnic, or socio-economic backgrounds. We also believe that students learn better through the sharing of ideas as they engage in authentic activities and real investigations. Highlighting contributions of many cultures and using language strategies that promote conceptual understanding - both play important roles in Sunrise . . . Sunset.

The goals of Sunrise . . . Sunset are:

  1. to create learning communities of students and teachers across cultures and geographic areas by utilizing telecommunications.
  2. to have students pose questions and conduct real-world scientific investigations around the central topic of the sun. Thus, students construct their own meaning of time, seasons, and the sun's relationship to the earth.
  3. to build multicultural awareness and understanding through shared experiences, interdisciplinary lessons, and telecommunicated dialogue.
  4. to develop language facility and understanding in students through written communications and language development strategies.
The units are designed and available for the K-3, 4-7 and 8-12 grade levels, in both telecommunicated and print versions.

We hope that you and your students will enjoy the learning activities in the unit, as well as the telecommunications component. Happy telecommunicating!

Sincerely,

Teacher Developers
