Sock Metamorphosis Poster
Flying Insect and Larva Sock Art

Please use unwanted mismatched/stained socks that one would usually toss.

Flying Insect

Supplies Needed: 2" ribbed top of sock, pipecleaners, tissue paper, markers

  1. Fold pipecleaner in half to create the insect's segmented body
  2. Slip/sandwich the body over the 2" ribbed wrist band
  3. Slip/sandwich the tissue-paper, marker colored, winged shape between the band and the body
  4. Fasten pipecleaner body down on wings and band, twisting pipecleaner to secure
  5. Fly/flap outside on wrist with wind
Larva Supplies Needed: Bottom cut portion of sock (tube)
  1. Dip tube sock into tempera paint mixed with water, soap, and liquid starch. Wring dry and sun dry.
  2. Shred newspaper into spaghetti strips and stuff sock with newspaper sphagetti
  3. Cut lengths of twine and tie-off sock into 3-4 sections. Leave ends of twine on, looks realistic. Close opening by folding ends over on to sock and tying off.
  4. Create head with pipecleaner, use pipe cleaner end-lengths for antennae.
  5. Large marker in mouth, eyes, body markings
  6. Place larva on paper-torn art food source.
  7. Add appropriate plant's flower
  8. Indicate egg and chrysalis stages with paper-torn cut paper art. Attach egg to paper leaf, chrysallis to found twig
  9. Attach egg, larva, twig with chrysalis and flying insect with tape to poster
